Phil Sperbeck

Post by Shoshanah Marohn »

Phil Sperbeck died July 18, 2025. He was 90 years old. According to his wife, Cynthia, his MSA is still set up! He played with Bob Wills for three years.

I found a lot of information with just a little search of his name on the forum. Sounds like he was a great player.

RIP, Phil.

It's great that he was able continue playing until age 90.

Yes Phil was really good. There are a couple of songs with Phil on the Kapp Label of a Bob Wills lp. I thought he was great!

I first met Phil in 1955 in Baton Rouge, La.
I had just gotten my Romero Pedal Steel. I think I recall that he was with Billy Gray at that time. He was planning a car trip to Alaska.

We continued to talk from time to time. He was a fine steel player, a super nice guy and good friend.

RIP Phil.

I had the contract to play the old Mayflower bar during Cheyenne Frontier Days I believe in the late 50S. I hired Phil to play steel and I fronted the band.. He did such a great job so I hired him the second year., and again super playing and a super nice guy.. It was a pleasure playing with him //// sorry to hear of his passing.. Lee Gillespie
