Zum Stage One tuning issues

Post by Leif Nicklas »

Can anyone tell me what the red tuning nuts on a Zum Stage One do? It says not to adjust them but I’m curious.

It seems there is only one tuning nut for 8, yet I need to tune the LKL AND LKR separately. Any ideas?

Also wondering if there is anyone, specifically in the Northwest (I’m in southern Oregon) that I could send my steel to to get it set up, there are some weird things going on and the manual isn’t a ton of help. Thank you

I suggest your first step should be to call Doug Earnest, who makes them. Doug is extremely helpful and knowledgeable and can probably talk you through many if not all the issues you're having. I can't speak for him but it's quite possible he could suggest someone in your area who could give you a hand if it's something more than just an adjustment.

Many play better than I do. Nobody has more fun.

Leif,

The red tuning nuts are for tuning the open E notes string 4 and 8. When the Stage One is set up correctly, these are rarely needed to be adjusted.

Try pressing your C pedal, tune the F# on string 4 at the Keyhead, release pedal and adjust the open E with the red tuning nut. Then, tune your LKR, E-D# if needed be, by adjusting the Allen key stop screw on the endplate for that string.

You LKL (F-lever), will tune with the corresponding nylon tuning nut at the endplate.

This should help get you in the ball park.

Leif, here is the same information i sent you in reply to your emails. It's on the forum in several places but here it is again

https://www.stageonesteelguitars.com/product-support

Owners manual and trouble shooting guide are here on my site.

The method Mike outlines in the post above will work but is not how the guy that designed the thing (not me) intended. Do what you like.

Adjust the red tuning nuts so they hold the changer finger in line with the adjacent changer fingers. Tune the E's to pitch. Adjust the raises on strings 4 and 8. Tune the lowered notes on strings 4 and 8 with the socket head hex screw in the endplate above the tuner window. String 2 works the same way. Follow the troubleshooting sheet step by step to reset the guitar and solve most other issues that ever arise.
